Dr. Alexandra Harlander Appointed EFC Research Chair in Poultry Welfare
Egg Farmers of Canada (EFC) in partnership with the University of Guelph is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Alexandra Harlander as the new Research Chair in Poultry Welfare. This decision comes as part of a renewed $1.3 million investment aimed at advancing research that enhances animal care standards and informs management practices in poultry farming.
Commitment to Research and Animal Welfare
John Cranfield, Dean of the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC), praised the ongoing collaboration between EFC and the University of Guelph, stating, “This long-standing commitment from EFC demonstrates the trust the agri-food sector has in the pioneering research being conducted at OAC.” He expressed gratitude for EFC’s sustained investment, which plays a crucial role in supporting sciences that benefit animal welfare, sustainability, and the future of Canadian agriculture.
Dr. Harlander’s Research Focus
Dr. Harlander’s research program emphasizes understanding the behavior and movement of laying hens in various housing systems. Her work has already significantly influenced the National Farm Animal Care Council’s Codes of Practice and has led to the creation of industry programs like a national feather-scoring system. This research has been partially funded through the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance, reflecting the strategic investment in poultry welfare.
Dr. Harlander’s Vision for Poultry Care
“True animal care is shared care,” Dr. Harlander remarked. “It includes the hens, the farmers, and the farm families in every barn across the country. I aim to develop practical, science-based solutions that benefit the birds and the wellbeing of the people who care for them.” She anticipates collaborating closely with farmers to tackle the challenges they encounter and is honored to take on the role of EFC Research Chair in Poultry Welfare.
The Role of EFC in Advancing Poultry Research
Roger Pelissero, a third-generation egg farmer and Chair of EFC, highlighted the importance of research in enhancing the sector. “Egg farmers are focused on advancing our sector through forward-looking, evidence-based research,” he noted. “Partnerships like this are vital in driving innovation, improving poultry health and wellbeing, and cultivating the next generation of experts in the field.” Dr. Harlander’s extensive expertise is expected to provide valuable insights for improving high animal care standards.
Continuing a Legacy
As the new research chair, Dr. Harlander will build upon the significant contributions made by her predecessor, Dr. Tina Widowski, who held the position since 2011. This long-established partnership between EFC and the University of Guelph emphasizes the latter’s pivotal role in agri-food research, yielding measurable benefits for farmers, animals, and consumers alike.
