Atlantic Sapphire Receives ASC Certification for Responsible Salmon Farming
Florida-based Atlantic Sapphire has made a significant stride in the aquaculture industry by becoming the first and only land-based salmon farm in the US to achieve Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification in 2025. This certification marks a milestone in the realm of responsibly farmed seafood, showcasing Atlantic Sapphire’s commitment to environmentally sustainable and socially responsible practices.
The ASC, a nonprofit organization, is renowned for its certification and labeling program that sets rigorous standards for farms to meet in order to demonstrate their commitment to responsible aquaculture. With the rise of Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) in recent years, the ASC has adapted its certification standards to account for the technical aspects of these systems.
One notable development is the introduction of the RAS Module, which focuses on areas such as water use, water quality, waste disposal, energy consumption, and emissions. To earn ASC certification, Atlantic Sapphire had to meet the requirements of the existing Salmon Standard along with those of the RAS module, including conducting a biodiversity impact assessment.
Atlantic Sapphire’s Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation
CEO Pedro Courard expressed pride in becoming the first ASC certified salmon farm in the US, emphasizing Atlantic Sapphire’s dedication to minimizing environmental impact, ensuring high animal welfare standards, and driving the future of responsible seafood production. The company believes that innovative and sustainable aquaculture practices are essential for safeguarding the environment while meeting the needs of a growing global population.
Atlantic Sapphire’s Bluehouse Technology, a cutting-edge method of land-based salmon farming, sets it apart in the market. This state-of-the-art facility in Homestead, Florida, leverages optimal controlled conditions to raise high-quality salmon responsibly. By eliminating risks such as parasites, wild fish disease, and environmental impacts, Atlantic Sapphire’s approach sets a new standard for land-based farming.
With a focus on creating economic and social value for Florida communities, Atlantic Sapphire is committed to promoting green jobs, investing in workforce training, and supporting the growth of a resilient domestic aquaculture industry.
Bringing Responsible Salmon Farming to North America
Atlantic Sapphire’s ascension as a leading producer of salmon in North America is not just about sustainability—it’s also about delivering fresh, high-quality seafood directly to retailers, distributors, and chefs across the continent. By producing salmon within the US market, the company eliminates the environmental burden of seafood airfreight, supports local food security, and ensures the availability of ultra-fresh ASC certified salmon.
As the appetite for responsibly farmed seafood continues to grow in North America, Atlantic Sapphire’s ASC certification paves the way for a future where sustainable aquaculture practices play a vital role in preserving our environment and meeting the demands of a burgeoning population.
