Revolutionizing Compliance: DNV Launches AI-Driven Technology for Fish Farms
Industry-first automated compliance solution reduces manual documentation and enhances integrity control in aquaculture.
DNV, the independent assurance and risk management provider, has announced the unveiling of its cutting-edge AI technology tailored for fish farming. This innovation targets essential compliance standards set by the Norwegian government, aiming to drastically cut labor hours, operational expenses, and prevent substantial fish stock losses.
Introducing Smarter Compliance
The innovative solution, named Smarter Compliance, is engineered to boost automation and benchmarking in the global aquaculture industry. It empowers fish farmers with real-time control and visibility of their compliance status anytime, anywhere.

Streamlined Compliance Monitoring
Moving away from traditional manual monitoring, the Smarter Compliance system automates continuous compliance assessments, providing an effortlessly managed overview for operators. This efficiency streamlines documentation practices, enhances monitoring accuracy, and facilitates easy data sharing with internal teams and external regulators alike. The solution integrates seamlessly with existing production and compliance platforms, accounting for all factors from maintenance to the legal regulations that must be adhered to.
A Shift in Compliance Frequency
Traditionally, compliance checks would occur every five years to align with Norway’s technical regulations for aquaculture, known as NYTEK. However, through the implementation of Smarter Compliance, fish farmers can now perform compliance monitoring on a weekly basis. This automated approach significantly reduces maintenance workload, operational costs, and risks associated with non-compliance—crucial for large offshore fish farms in challenging environments.
Positive Feedback from Early Adopters
Several Norwegian fish farms, including GIFAS, have tested the new technology, with Production Manager Arve Storholm commenting: “This solution will shift our focus from infrequent, large-scale checks to ongoing monitoring, boosting our control and providing peace of mind. It becomes a centralized source of truth with equal access to information for all stakeholders, ultimately minimizing documentation burden. I eagerly anticipate its implementation.”
Meeting Government Standards
DNV’s Smarter Compliance aligns with the Norwegian government’s aquaculture report ‘Havbruksmeldingen,’ which advocates for fully digitized autonomous reporting of compliance and regulatory data. The government emphasizes the necessity for a unified system that ensures robust data security while effectively managing the increasing reporting demands on the industry: “The incorporation of automated reporting will alleviate the industry’s workload created by growing reporting necessities.” (Meld. St. 24 (2024-2025) Fremtidens havbruk).
A Vision for Enhanced Aquaculture
“Stricter regulations and rising stakeholder expectations are revolutionizing aquaculture. Fish farmers now face an urgent need for effective compliance management. Our new digital service addresses this challenge, simplifying the handling of complex requirements with clarity and assurance. By providing continual insights across the industry, Smarter Compliance contributes to making aquaculture more sustainable and economically viable for Norway,” explained Mads Arild Eidem, Director of Norway Aquaculture Operations at DNV.
“Smarter Compliance supports our commitment to minimizing fish escapes and, in time, enhancing animal welfare, reducing mortality rates, and propelling the aquaculture sector toward the production of healthier and more resilient fish,” Eidem added.
Svein Andorsen, Produksjonssjef at Ellingsen Seafood, remarked, “Having a status overview like this brings me peace of mind. Knowing everything is in order allows me to focus on other critical tasks.”
