This week’s sale experienced warm weather and a substantial turnout, with over 7400 head of cattle penned. Regular buyers, including lotfeeders and backgrounders, were active in the competition, sourcing cattle from various regions across Australia.
The yarding comprised cattle from the local Maranoa supply district, encompassing areas like Amby, Injune, Jackson, Mitchell, and Yuleba. Additionally, cattle were sourced from western regions, including Augathella, Blackall, and Tambo, as well as further south from Bollon, Dirranbandi, Mungindi, and St George in Queensland, and Coonamble in New South Wales.

BRF Southern successfully offloaded Santa Gertrudis cross steers, achieving prices of up to 554c/kg for an average weight of 271kg, resulting in a return of $1,502/head. From the same location in St George, another pen fetched 570c/kg for an average weight of 293kg, yielding $1,671/head.

PW & YR Johnson of ‘Innisvale’, Injune, also performed well with Santa Gertrudis cross steers, recording a sale price of 518c/kg for an average weight of 377kg, resulting in $1,955/head. Another group sold for 544c/kg at 323kg, totaling $1,757/head. These cattle were consigned through Nutrien Roma.
Market Commentary
The Roma Agents reported a total yarding of 7405 head amidst scorching heat. While regular buyers were present, they exhibited selectivity in their purchases. The quality of cattle was highlighted, with a mix of well-finished bullocks, heavy heifers, and prime cows maintaining similar rates to the previous sale. However, other categories faced struggles.
Steer and Heifer Prices
Yearling steers weighing 200 to 280kg sold between 310c to 570c/kg for restockers. Categories expanded up to 500c/kg, with heavier weights fetching 500c/kg for lot feeders and 508c/kg for restockers.
Yearling heifers also showed a varied market, with weights from 200 to 280kg selling from 328c to 420c/kg to restockers, averaging at 408c/kg for the 280-330kg group.
Cow Prices and Other Sales
Approximately 1300 cows were penned, with prime score 3 cows over 520kg selling between 347c to 402c/kg. Cows and calves saw a strong market, with a run of 149 units selling from $600/unit to as high as $2,660/unit, averaging $2,161/unit.

Weekly Sale Overview
Heifers under 200kg topped at 370c/kg, while those in the 200-280kg range reached 428c/kg. Notable sales included Angus cross steers by Laurita Pastoral Company at 594c/kg, and several sales of Santa Gertrudis steers reaching around 588c/kg across different consignors.
