Victoria Supports Livestock Producers with Affordable NLIS Ear Tags

Victoria is taking a significant step forward in supporting its livestock producers by offering the lowest-priced National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) ear tags in Australia. This initiative is part of the state’s ongoing commitment to maintain the viability and competitiveness of its agricultural sector.

Competitive Pricing for Producers

Charlotte Austin, the Agriculture Victoria biosecurity executive director, announced that a recent competitive tender process has resulted in NLIS tags being available at prices equal to or lower than those from the previous year. “Victorian producers can now access NLIS tags at some of the nation’s lowest prices, thereby keeping on-farm costs manageable while upholding our world-class traceability reputation,” Ms. Austin stated.

Price Reductions for Cattle Tags

The cost of the cheapest NLIS cattle tag has been reduced to just 72 cents when ordered online through Agriculture Victoria, down from 75 cents last year. In stark contrast, producers in other states are paying between $2.50 and $4 for similar tags, demonstrating Victoria’s commitment to its farming community.

Expanded Range of Approved Tags

In addition to lower prices, the range of approved NLIS cattle tags in Victoria has also expanded. New options include a one-piece metal tag from Shearwell Australia and NLIS tags manufactured by Enduro Tags and FOFIA. This variety allows producers to select tags that best meet their operational needs.

Benefits for Sheep Producers

Sheep producers are also set to benefit from this initiative, with the cheapest NLIS sheep tag now available for just $1, which is significantly lower than unsubsidized prices in other regions. The pricing adjustments come as a result of strong wholesale pricing secured through the recent tender process and support from Victoria’s livestock compensation funds.

Future Tag Purchases

Producers are expected to purchase over two million cattle tags and ten million sheep tags by the year 2026. These electronic tags facilitate the recording of livestock movements on the NLIS database, which is crucial as animals transition between properties, saleyards, and abattoirs.

Importance of the NLIS System

Ms. Austin emphasized the importance of this system, stating, “This allows livestock to be traced quickly and efficiently during food safety or disease incidents, safeguarding both Victoria’s domestic market and its access to export markets.” Victoria has been at the forefront of the NLIS development since the 1990s, with the system for sheep and goats being made mandatory in 2017.
