Aaron Flansburg: Pioneering Organic Farming in Washington’s Palouse Region

Aaron Flansburg, a dedicated fifth-generation farmer, has spent his life cultivating the fertile lands of Flansburg Farm in Palouse, Washington. After graduating from Washington State University in 2002, he returned to the family farm, eager to continue the legacy started by his ancestors.

Growing a Family Tradition

Now in his 23rd crop year, Aaron manages approximately 2,000 acres of dryland crops including wheat, barley, peas, lentils, chickpeas, canola, and alfalfa, working closely with his wife and their three children. This family-oriented approach not only nurtures the land but also ensures the continuation of agrarian values.

Commitment to Innovation

Aaron’s family has always prided itself on being “innovative and progressive,” particularly regarding sustainable farming practices. “We strive to maintain soil health and keep it intact while employing the best farming techniques,” Aaron explains. This commitment to sustainability naturally led him to consider organic farming as a viable option for the future.

The Transition to Organic

In 2020, he began transitioning to organic production, starting with 50 acres. Fast forward to today, and Flansburg Farm boasts 160 certified organic acres, with plans to expand further. The journey into organic farming marks a significant shift, characterized by six years of farming without chemical inputs.

Focus on Self-Sufficiency

With a keen focus on self-sufficiency, Aaron aims to control costs, limit soil input, and build resilient domestic markets. This strategic approach allows him to rely less on foreign supplies and global trade, ensuring a sustainable future for his family and his farm.
