The Kazakhstan government has proposed a six-month ban on egg imports, including from fellow members of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU), to enhance the local egg industry.

The ban initiative, backed by the Kazakhstan Union of Poultry Farmers, is intended to shield the domestic market from low-cost imports, particularly from Russia. Kairat Maishev, the head of the Union of Poultry Farmers of Kazakhstan, noted that the local egg sector produced 4.5 billion eggs in 2025, nearing full self-sufficiency.
“This is not the first time such a measure has been proposed. It’s viewed as a chance to further grow the industry and enhance the competitiveness of Kazakh products,” he stated.

With this regulatory move, the government seeks to protect substantial investments made within the Kazakhstan poultry sector in recent years. Several farms have modernised and expanded operations, benefiting from various state support programs.
Although the draft decree is still pending public hearings and formal implementation, the Union of Poultry Farmers has commended the government’s proactive stance in supporting the sector.
