Investment in Northern Territory Livestock Biosecurity Strengthens Industry
The Northern Territory Government has unveiled significant investments in biosecurity aimed at bolstering the livestock industry. This includes the hiring of four new livestock biosecurity officers and an additional $1 million in funding, part of the 2026-27 budget initiatives.
Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries, Gerard Maley, emphasized that these funds will enhance the Territory’s biosecurity measures, crucial for protecting an industry vital to job creation, exports, and regional advancement.
Importance of Strong Biosecurity Systems
“In our year of growth, certainty, and security, we are backing our cattle industry to ensure it has the robust foundations necessary for future expansion,” Mr. Maley stated. He asserted that biosecurity is essential for maintaining market access, protecting herd health, and instilling confidence across the supply chain.
Ongoing Support and Activities
This investment will facilitate a variety of essential activities, including:
- Setting up a dedicated traceability and compliance unit to enhance livestock tracking.
- Digitalization of NT Waybills, improving both efficiency and accuracy in livestock movements.
- Heightened focus on emergency animal disease preparedness.
- Increased assistance for NT Police investigations concerning livestock theft.
Mr. Maley highlighted that the funding will lead to practical improvements for producers, exporters, and local communities. “Our aim is to simplify business operations, bolster compliance, and ensure secure supply chains from paddock to port,” he noted.
Broader Economic Strategy
This initiative complements the CLP Government’s broader strategy aimed at revitalizing the economy by supporting key industries with strong long-term growth potential, such as agriculture, mining, energy, and tourism.
Future Outlook
Mr. Maley reiterated the significance of this investment in safeguarding the Territory’s position as Australia’s frontline against biosecurity risks, ensuring that producers, supply chains, and markets remain secure. The NT Budget is set to be announced on Tuesday, May 5.
