The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has cracked down on the sale of unregistered agricultural and veterinary (agvet) chemical products online. In a six-month period from July to December 2024, the APVMA took action against 532 unregistered products being sold on various online platforms.
According to APVMA Chief Executive Officer Scott Hansen, all agvet chemical products sold in Australia must be registered or approved by the APVMA. This requirement ensures that products meet legal, safety, and effectiveness standards. Consumers can verify a product’s registration by checking for the APVMA registration number on the label or using the APVMA’s products and permits database.
The APVMA collaborates with major online marketplaces such as eBay, Amazon, and Facebook to monitor and remove listings of unregistered products. Entities found selling unregistered products face penalties of up to $2.3 million. The APVMA urges consumers to report any suspicious products and avoid purchasing unregistered items to protect human health, animal welfare, and environmental safety.
