China Imposes 34% Tariff on U.S. Imports in Retaliation to Trump’s Tariffs
BANGKOK (AP) — China announced Friday that it will impose a 34% tariff on imports of all U.S. products beginning April 10, as part of a series of retaliatory measures following U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent imposition of double-digit tariffs.
The new tariff rate matches the 34% reciprocal tariff that the U.S. imposed on Chinese exports earlier this week.
The Commerce Ministry in Beijing also stated that it will implement stricter export controls on rare earths, essential materials in high-tech products like computer chips and electric vehicle batteries.
Among the controlled minerals are samarium and its compounds utilized in aerospace manufacturing and defense, as well as gadolinium used in MRI scans.
China’s customs administration declared a suspension on chicken imports from certain U.S. suppliers due to the detection of furazolidone, a banned drug in China, in their shipments.
Moreover, the presence of high mold levels in sorghum and salmonella in poultry meat from specific companies led to further actions affecting C&D Inc. and four poultry exporters.
Additionally, China added 27 firms to its list of companies subject to trade sanctions or export controls, from which 16 face restrictions on “dual-use” goods.
The Chinese government also initiated a lawsuit against the United States at the World Trade Organization over the tariffs issue, condemning it as a unilateral bullying practice that disrupts the global economic order.
Further actions include an anti-monopoly probe into DuPont China Group Co. and an anti-dumping investigation on X-ray tube imports from the U.S. and India.
In February, China placed a 15% tariff on U.S. coal and liquefied natural gas imports, along with a separate 10% tariff on crude oil, agricultural machinery, and large-engine cars.
While trade tensions escalate, U.S. and Chinese military officials recently met in Shanghai to discuss mutual concerns about military safety at sea, demonstrating a less confrontational aspect of the bilateral relationship.
