Onda Develops Innovative Rapid Diagnostic Test Kits for Aquaculture with Ignition Fund Grant
Onda, a prominent Canadian contract research organization specializing in aquaculture health, nutrition, and innovation, has recently secured funding from the prestigious Ignition Fund. This grant will support Onda in developing rapid diagnostic test kits aimed at enhancing disease detection and management in the aquaculture industry.
The Ignition Fund, initiated by Innovation PEI, offers competitive funding for entrepreneurs looking for start-up capital for innovative business ventures or new product development. The fund provides seed capital to successful applicants, enabling them to transform ideas into viable businesses. Through this support, the Ignition Fund plays a significant role in promoting innovation-driven enterprises in Prince Edward Island.
With the backing of this funding, Onda will advance its efforts in creating user-friendly, field-deployable diagnostic kits that allow aquaculture producers to swiftly and accurately detect pathogens affecting fish and shellfish health. Presently, the industry lacks on-the-farm testing options that offer rapid results, presenting Onda with an opportunity to bridge this gap and assist farmers in responding to health challenges promptly and effectively.
Myrna Gillis, CEO of Onda, emphasized the importance of aquaculture for Atlantic Canada’s economy and sustainability, stating, “This grant from the Ignition Fund enables us to expedite the development of rapid, reliable diagnostic solutions that empower producers with real-time health monitoring tools.”
Traditional disease detection methods in aquaculture often rely on laboratory-based testing, which can be time-consuming and costly. Onda’s innovative approach aims to provide a cost-effective and efficient alternative, facilitating early disease detection and proactive management to reduce losses and enhance industry resilience.
The research and development activities supported by the Ignition Fund will be conducted at Onda’s Souris, PEI facility. The company intends to collaborate with industry partners, government agencies, and academic researchers to refine and validate the technology before its market launch.
