Empowering Futures: The Transformation of a Community Through Poultry Farming
Jeraldine’s Journey
Jeraldine’s aspirations began with modest dreams but faced significant hurdles. After graduating from an agricultural school, she envisioned establishing her own farming business. However, the ongoing insecurity in her community stymied her efforts, depriving her of access to farmland and depleting her savings as she struggled to support her family. Without financial resources and safe opportunities to start her business, Jeraldine found herself struggling to navigate an uncertain future.
Support and Empowerment
Thanks to the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction and Development of the North-West and South-West regions, along with assistance from the UNDP Recovery Programme and funding from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), Jeraldine and over 200 other farmers were chosen for empowerment in poultry farming. Through this initiative, they received essential poultry farming equipment and training in technical and business skills, initiating a transformative chapter in Jeraldine’s life.
“When I received the equipment, I knew this was my chance to change everything,” reflects Jeraldine.

A Growing Enterprise
With the tools and support provided, Jeraldine partnered with a neighbor to establish a poultry farm. Starting with just a handful of chicks, their venture swiftly expanded to a flock of over 200 birds. The eggs and chickens began supplying local markets and restaurants, leading to a steady income that transformed her family’s finances.
“I never imagined I could provide a stable future for my children, but today, I have the means to take care of my family and save for their future. The business chain I have built also supports the livelihood of other families,” Annabel expresses with heartfelt gratitude.
Community Impact
The ripple effect of Jeraldine’s business outreach extends deeply within her community. George, a young internally displaced person (IDP) working at the farm, shares his experience:
“Working with Jeraldine has been fulfilling. I’ve learned so much about poultry farming. The salary I earn, though modest, allows me to take care of my siblings and save for my own future business,” George confides.
Jeraldine’s commitment also resonates with local business owners. Emmanuel Ngum, a restaurant owner, praises her products:
“Jeraldine’s eggs and chickens are of excellent quality and have become a reliable source for our restaurant. Thanks to her steady supply, I’ve been able to expand my menu and attract more customers. Her hard work is truly inspiring,” Emmanuel attests.
Achievements of the Program
This initiative falls under the local economic revitalization pillar of the PPRD, aimed at addressing various challenges faced by communities in the North-West and South-West regions. Key accomplishments include:
- 1725 hectares of farm rehabilitated
- 2461 farmers supported with essential equipment, tools, and materials
- 67 innovative production and transformation units established
- 23 markets constructed or rehabilitated
- 171 agro-pastoral groups supported
- 321 youth start-ups supported
Looking Ahead
“Despite significant progress, there are still youth, women, and families in need. The availability of more resources will enable us to respond to their needs effectively,” observes Mary Nyuyinui, Coordinator of the UNDP Recovery Programme in the North-West Region of Cameroon.
