Ahimsa Companies Invests $12 Million in Ohio Plant to Expand Plant-Based Production
Ahimsa Companies, a holding firm dedicated to promoting a plant-based food system, has committed $12 million to its manufacturing facility in Heath, Ohio. This plant was acquired from Gathered Foods last year, as the company ramps up production with major partners anticipated for the first quarter of 2026, according to CEO Matthew Tullman.
Major Investments and Future Production
Tullman highlighted, “We are still tracking to spend eight digits on capital expenditure projects in Ohio alongside some large plant-based partners.” While he could not disclose specific co-manufacturing partners or the products under development due to confidentiality, he did share insights about their progress.
“We’ve formed a new contract manufacturing entity, Plant Plant, which operates out of the Ohio facility. We are producing for our own brands in collaboration with other plant-based brands. We anticipate producing tens of millions of pounds of plant-based foods from that facility by 2026,” he stated.
Expansion and Enhancements in Production Capabilities
Further renovations at the facility will enhance its production capabilities, allowing the company to handle everything from powdered protein to frying and packaging. “I can’t disclose too much, but we’re also adding new capabilities on top of that,” Tullman mentioned.
Industry Consolidation Efforts
As part of its broader strategy, Ahimsa aims to consolidate the industry, focusing on distressed brands and opportunities for vertical integration. Tullman explained, “We’re highly motivated to support brands that are driving positive change in our eating habits. Our strategy involves continuous investments in portfolio companies and acquiring complementary businesses.”
Backed by the Ahimsa Foundation, which has also invested in prominent plant-based brands, Ahimsa Companies aims to foster efficiencies and build sustainable ventures.
Portfolio Performance and Strategic Acquisitions
Ahimsa’s recent acquisitions include Wicked Kitchen, Simulate/Nuggs, and Blackbird Foods. Tullman confirmed that while Good Catch and Current Foods were part of the Wicked Kitchen acquisition, they were not pursued for relaunch.
While the Simulate brand has shifted focus from its original Nuggs line, Tullman emphasized the development of technology for fiber-spun whole-cut plant-based chicken, aimed at improving texture and structure compared to conventional chicken breast.
Blackbird: A Growing Success Story
Conversely, Tullman noted that Blackbird Foods is thriving, operating in over 4,000 retail locations and recently partnering with Whole Foods Market. This launch aligns perfectly with the back-to-school season, with seitan-based products leading the way in performance.
Navigating Market Challenges
Tullman addressed the challenges facing the plant-based market: “The category is resetting after dramatic growth, but our confidence stems from strong long-term fundamentals.” He highlighted the necessity of alternatives to animal agriculture in combating health trends and climate change.
Responding to views that consumer demand is faltering, he acknowledged that while complete abandonment of meat is unrealistic, there is a significant flexitarian market seeking improved plant-based options. Tullman pointed out that enhancing taste, price, and convenience remains critical.
Long-Term Vision and Future Prospects
“We’re seeing improvements; for instance, Beyond Meat’s switch to avocado oil demonstrates the direction brands are taking,” he stated. “The opportunity in this sector is still viable, even if it takes longer than initially expected to materialize.”
