Beef Producers Maintain Confidence Amidst Market Challenges
Despite ongoing global challenges, beef producers are exhibiting strong confidence levels according to the latest Beef Producer Intentions Survey published by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA).
Survey Highlights
The April 2025 edition of the survey includes data from 3,116 grassfed beef producers across Australia, offering a detailed overview of herd demographics, producer sentiment, breeding and sales intentions, as well as market dynamics.
Nationally, producer sentiment has strengthened, with a net sentiment score of +53, an increase from +47 recorded in November 2024. Northern producers reported the highest confidence levels at +65, while Western Australia saw a notable recovery in sentiment, jumping to +14 from -25 the previous year.
Herd Size Intentions
When questioned about their herd intentions, 26% of producers plan to increase their herd size over the next 12 months. Meanwhile, 56% aim to maintain their current levels, with only 19% expecting to reduce their herd size.
According to MLA’s Market Information Manager, Stephen Bignell, the current data reflects a stable outlook across both northern and southern production systems, indicating cautious yet optimistic attitudes among producers. “These intentions show confidence in the prevailing market conditions,” Mr. Bignell stated.
Mixed Seasonal and Market Conditions
The April 2025 survey was conducted amid diverse seasonal and market conditions. Northern Australia faced significant rainfall and flooding, limiting participation in central and southwestern Queensland, though fostering improved pasture conditions in other regions. Conversely, southern Australia contended with dry and drought conditions, influencing breeding and sales strategies.
Global market dynamics have also affected producer sentiment, with increased demand from China, ongoing herd rebuilding efforts in the United States, and shifting tariff arrangements contributing to a blend of optimism and uncertainty. Many producers cited improving prices, favorable seasonal conditions, and enhanced market access as key factors bolstering their positive outlook.
Concerns for the Future
Despite this optimism, producers expressed concerns about geopolitical instability, rising input costs, and regulatory pressures, which might impact future market dynamics.
Sales Activity
Sales activity remains strong, with producers reporting a total of 4.82 million head sold or anticipated to be sold in the first half of 2025. Sales were evenly distributed between the first and second quarters, with southern producers experiencing slightly higher sales in the first quarter due to earlier seasonal turnover.
“Northern producers have benefited from improved pasture conditions following substantial rainfall, enabling them to hold stock longer and prepare for increased sales in the second quarter,” Mr. Bignell explained.
