BIM Launches New Seafood Academy to Support Independent Seafood Retail and Foodservice Sectors
Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), Ireland’s Seafood Development Agency, has recently introduced the Seafood Academy, a national initiative designed to empower and enhance the independent seafood retail and foodservice industries across the country.
Focus Areas of the Seafood Academy
The Seafood Academy aims to bolster business development, provide skills training, and foster collaboration among seafood professionals. By equipping these stakeholders with essential tools, the Academy seeks to elevate consumer engagement and stimulate sustainable seafood sales.
Launch of the Academy’s First Project
This week marks the beginning of the Academy’s inaugural project in Howth, where six independent seafood retailers are joining forces to create a new consumer-focused website and launch a comprehensive marketing campaign: famousforfish.ie. This campaign is set to highlight the expertise and fresh local seafood offerings from:
- Nicky’s Plaice
- Dorans on the Pier
- Kish Fish
- Reid’s Fish Market
- Wrights of Howth
- Beshoff’s the Market
This initiative will also be featured at the upcoming Howth Harbour Festival in September, aiming to further promote the quality and traditions of Irish seafood.
Insights from BIM Leadership
Paul Ward, Head of Business Intelligence at BIM, has shared insights regarding the initiative:
“While the Irish seafood retail market was valued at €333 million in 2024, much of the growth has come from rising prices rather than increased demand. The Seafood Academy empowers independent seafood retailers to build consumer appreciation for local seafood through education, collaboration, and shared business insights. It will also elevate understanding and appreciation of Irish seafood within the foodservice sector through targeted education and business intelligence programmes.”
Retailer Perspectives
Martin McLoughlin from Nicky’s Plaice expressed enthusiasm for the Academy’s potential and their collaboration:
“Fishing is at the heart of Howth’s history, and we’re proud to continue that tradition by working together to showcase the very best seafood our pier has to offer. The new Howth: Famous for Fish website makes it easier than ever for people to discover our fishmongers, learn about our catch, and get inspired with fresh ideas for their table.”
Future Plans for the Seafood Academy
The Seafood Academy is a component of BIM’s broader strategic vision to cultivate regional clusters of seafood businesses nationwide. A new cluster is slated for South County Dublin by the end of 2025, with additional clusters expected in 2026.
Ward highlighted the overarching goal:
“Through this cluster-led approach, BIM aims to ensure that independent fishmongers remain a vibrant and resilient part of Ireland’s seafood sector, supporting local jobs and the wider economy.”
