Food Lion Launches Annual Orange Bag Campaign to Combat Hunger
Food Lion kicked off its much-anticipated annual Orange Bag campaign on February 25, inviting customers to make a difference in their communities by purchasing fresh navel oranges. This initiative runs for three weeks, until March 17, and aims to raise funds for those facing food insecurity through its Food Lion Feeds program.
Impacting Communities Through Fresh Produce
The Orange Bag campaign benefits Feeding America and local food banks across Food Lion’s 10-state service area. Launched in 2019, the campaign has successfully provided over 41 million meals to those in need.
“Food insecurity doesn’t take a season off,” stated Kevin Durkee, manager of Food Lion Feeds. “The Orange Bag campaign gives customers an easy way to support their communities while bringing high-quality produce to their families. Every bag purchased helps local food partners provide nutritious food that individuals and families can choose and use to set them up for success in life.”
How the Campaign Works
With every purchase of a specially marked Food Lion brand orange bag, Food Lion Feeds will donate the monetary equivalent of five meals to Feeding America and local food banks, up to a total of two million meals. Donations to each food bank are determined based on the number of eligible bags sold within that specific area.
Customers looking to contribute further can make cash donations either in-store, online via Food Lion To Go, or by rounding up their purchase totals at checkout. Notably, Food Lion guarantees a minimum contribution of $200,000 – equivalent to two million meals – and pledges to donate 100% of cash donations collected during this initiative.
Complementary Initiatives to Address Food Insecurity
The Orange Bag campaign is one of several efforts spearheaded by Food Lion Feeds aimed at alleviating hunger. This year also marks the seventh season of the retailer’s Score to Give More program, which collaborates with 55 collegiate basketball teams across the Food Lion footprint. With every free throw made by participating teams, meals are provided to those in need.
As of now, the teams have achieved over 15,000 free throws, resulting in more than 1.5 million meals donated to Feeding America partner food banks.
