Future Grass Growers Forum: Empowering Young Agricultural Leaders
Shelly and Clint Hawkins are guest speakers at the Future Grass Growers Forum on 3 October.
Engaging the next generation in agriculture is one of the industry’s most pressing challenges. However, once young people are introduced to agriculture, how much effort do businesses put into their professional development and support? This is where initiatives like the Future Grass Growers Forum come into play.
GroWQ is set to host the Future Grass Growers Forum on Friday, 3 October, in Longreach, Western Queensland. The event aims to empower young and early-career individuals in agriculture by providing practical insights, inspiration, and networking opportunities.
The inaugural forum was initiated by a group of young producers seeking guidance and mentorship to advance their careers in agriculture.
Event organizer Prue Button encourages employers to send their young staff members to the forum, emphasizing the importance of investing in the future workforce of agriculture.
“Give them the day off the tools, shout them the ticket, and spread awareness about this event. That is how we ensure the future of agriculture: by investing in our young people and providing them with opportunities,” she stated.
Tom McLeish, one of the owners of TopX—an agency celebrating 30 successful years in the industry—will be one of the keynote speakers.
“I am truly passionate about the countryside and the opportunities available for those who are committed and hardworking in the industry. I am thrilled to be a part of this event,” remarked Mr. McLeish.
Joining Tom will be Clint and Shelly Hawkins from HC Pastoral, who will share their journey and the lessons they’ve learned throughout their careers in agriculture.
“We are genuinely passionate about this industry and love mentoring young individuals to succeed,” said Shelly Hawkins. “We benefited immensely from our mentors, so it’s rewarding for us to give back.”
The event will cover various topics including:
- Smarter funding options
- Funding pathways with QRIDA
- Practical animal nutrition
- Regenerating rangelands
- Understanding genetics and EBVs
- Career pathways in corporate agriculture
- Buying and selling land
- Effective communication strategies
- Fostering rural romance and connections
- Building wellbeing in agricultural life
A meet and greet will kick off the event on Thursday, 2 October, followed by the annual Flyers Ball, which serves as a fundraiser for the Royal Flying Doctors Service and other local charities.
