Innovasea Joins Forces with the Andrew J. Young Foundation for Aquaponics Initiatives
Innovasea, a leader in cutting-edge aquatic solutions for aquaculture, is thrilled to announce its collaboration with the Andrew J. Young Foundation through its Forever Young Aquaponics initiative.
About the Partnership
Founded by civil rights leader Andrew Young, the Forever Young Aquaponics project aims to develop two advanced, fully recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) integrated with aquaponics facilities in the United States. These facilities are set to open in Colorado and Georgia, both designed and supported by Innovasea.
Understanding Aquaponics
Aquaponics combines aquaculture (raising fish) with hydroponics (growing plants without soil) to form a sustainable and self-sustaining ecosystem. This innovative farming practice has the potential to yield high productivity while being environmentally friendly.
The Facilities in Detail
Colorado Facility
The Colorado site, equipped with eight fish tanks, will cultivate rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) alongside baby spinach. Fish have already been introduced into this facility, which aims to produce 20-30 tons of aquaculture each year on land previously deemed unusable in southern Colorado’s arid climate.
Georgia Facility
In Georgia, which is twice the size of its Colorado counterpart, tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) will be raised alongside a mix of baby mesclun greens. Construction is currently underway, with the facility anticipated to be operational by 2026. Upon completion, it is expected to produce 70 tons of tilapia annually and over 10,000 pounds of fresh vegetables weekly.
Innovative Design and Collaboration
Developing these aquaponics systems required Innovasea’s RAS design team to create adaptable solutions that cater to the unique flow and operational needs of each facility. “Innovasea’s expertise was crucial in helping us design farms capable of thriving in their specific locations,” noted Arvind Vankat, Managing Partner of Forever Young Farms.
Community Impact and Future Goals
The Andrew J. Young Foundation, established in 2003, is committed to creating more equitable and sustainable communities. The Forever Young Farms initiative directly addresses food insecurity by empowering local farmers with the necessary tools, technology, and support to succeed in aquaponics farming.
This program allows eligible farmers to start operations on their land without the burden of initial capital expenditures. Forever Young Aquaponics will facilitate management of the farm, allowing landowners to gradually acquire ownership over time.
A Vision for Sustainable Farming
“Forever Young Aquaponics isn’t merely about food production; it represents a sustainable model for year-round fresh food cultivation while conserving vital natural resources,” emphasized Ambassador Andrew J Young.
