Lantra and Industry Partners Unveil New Aquaculture Resources to Enhance Classroom Learning
Lantra Scotland has introduced two fresh student workbooks designed to bolster the National Progression Award (NPA) Level 4 in Aquaculture.
This initiative serves as a direct pathway for school students into the aquaculture sector, forging vital links between marine farms and the surrounding communities.
Collaborative Development for Educational Excellence
Over a span of nine months, Lantra collaborated with industry leaders such as Bakkafrost Scotland, Mowi Scotland, Scottish Sea Farms, and UHI Argyll to craft these workbooks. Addressing the demand for professional and engaging educational materials, the resources aim to support uniform delivery in educational settings.
Each workbook is loaded with topic introductions, activity-based learning segments, and designated areas for students to record their work experiences, effectively bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Voices from the Industry
Dr. Jillian Couto-Phoenix stated:
“This project exemplifies what can be accomplished when education and industry unite for a common goal. By collaborating closely, we’ve developed resources that offer young people a comprehensive and dynamic insight into aquaculture, building their confidence and honing the skills essential in the sector. We aspire to strengthen local talent pipelines and support sustainable workforce development in communities where aquaculture is pivotal.”
Adding to this sentiment, Irene Pozom, Talent Development Business Partner at Scottish Sea Farms, remarked:
“For us, this collaboration transcends the creation of teaching materials; it’s an investment in our communities’ futures. By partnering with Lantra Scotland and fellow producers, we’ve established a reliable, accessible path for young individuals interested in aquaculture, even if they previously lacked the opportunity to explore it. These new resources will empower students to recognize local opportunities and cultivate a robust workforce for years ahead.”
Insights from Additional Partners
Donald Waring, Learning and Development Manager at Mowi Scotland, further commented:
“Our experience in the Outer Hebrides informed the creation of these workbooks, ensuring they are both practical and adaptable for varied teaching environments. The final product is genuinely valuable for students and contributes to building local talent over the long term.”
Meanwhile, Jennifer Allison, Senior Human Resources Business Partner at Bakkafrost Scotland, noted:
“Our involvement was focused on ensuring the content accurately reflects contemporary salmon farming practices. These workbooks will provide students with a clearer understanding of the sector and furnish instructors with a solid foundation to operate from. It’s a resource that promises to benefit both classrooms and communities.”
Availability of the Workbooks
The newly developed workbooks are now accessible across the UK and can assist any school keen on introducing students to the fundamentals of aquaculture.
