Online Cattle Trading Update: Steer and Heifer Prices Rise

This week saw continuing upward momentum in the prices of lighter steers and heifers in online cattle trading, with a total of 9,355 head offered on AuctionsPlus.
The overall offering was down by 19% compared to last week, with the clearance rate dipping slightly to 83%—a 5% decrease.
Dealings were predominantly noted in the states of New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland, although Queensland’s contribution saw a reduction of 1,680 head this week. NSW buyers were the most active, purchasing 3,613 head, while Queensland followed with 2,118 head.
Out of the total, steers made up 5,392 head, reflecting 58% of the offering.
Steers in the 200-280kg range experienced a price rise of 31c, averaging 500c/kg, with 89% of the 1,623 head clearing. Medium-weight steers (280-330kg) saw a slight increase of 4c, averaging 451c/kg, but only cleared 76% of the 1,398 head offered. Conversely, heavier steers (330-400kg) saw a decline of 42c, averaging 416c with an 82% clearance rate for the 1,510 entries. Heavy feeders (>400kg) managed to increase by 49c, averaging 488c/kg and clearing 91% of the 785 head offered.
A noteworthy sale involved a line of Hereford and Hereford cross steers aged 6-8 months, weighing an average of 198kg from Haden, Queensland, which fetched $820/head or 415c/kg, destined for a buyer near Bowenville, Queensland.
Heifer Market Trends
In total, 2,132 heifers were offered this week. Light heifers (200-280kg) surged by 52c, averaging 417c/kg, with a clearance of 92% from the offering of 1,197 head. Heifers in the 280-330kg range cleared 94%, though prices fell by 12c/kg to average 351c.
From Wallaroo, NSW, a group of 35 Angus heifers aged 10-11 months, averaging 359kg, returned $1,570/head or 438c/kg and will be shipped to a buyer near Bathurst, NSW.
Breeding Females Overview
Breeding females included an offering of 1,710 head this week.
Station-mated heifers made a notable improvement with only 200 available, clearing 47% but lifting the average value by $681 to $2,041. PTIC (Pregnant This Included) heifers, in contrast, saw an average value drop of $171, finishing at $1,643, clearing only 49% of the 632 head.
A small collection of NSM (Not Served Mated) cows and calves saw a value drop of $400, averaging $2,060. PTIC cows increased slightly by $13, averaging $1,976 with an 84% clearance rate.
A significant sale included 26 Angus cows aged 34-35 months from Tarcutta, NSW, averaging 454kg, which sold for $2,500 and will head to a buyer in Boorowa, NSW.
