Meat & Poultry Ontario Celebrates 45 Years at Annual Awards Gala

Meat & Poultry Ontario (MPO) proudly celebrated its 45th anniversary during the 2025 Awards Gala, held on October 25 at Blue Mountain. This annual event brought together MPO members to honor the individuals and families that form the backbone of the association, recognizing their unwavering commitment to both the organization and Ontario’s meat and poultry sector.

The evening began with special remarks commemorating the milestone delivered by MPO Chair, Gerhard Metzger of Metzger Meats. Executive Director Franco Naccarato followed with a toast to the organization.

<p>“What an incredible turnout for tonight’s Awards Gala, which continues to grow in popularity each year,” said Metzger. “It is truly a privilege to serve as Chair of MPO and represent our industry. This is an exciting year for MPO, as we celebrate 45 years!”</p>

Naccarato echoed this sentiment, adding, “Today was filled with energy and connection, bringing together industry professionals for a well-rounded experience. It was a full day that balanced learning, networking, and celebration of the craft.”

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award, which honored Steve Young of <em>The Yes Group</em> and Scott McQuay of <em>Viscofan</em> for their exceptional contributions to Ontario’s meat industry.
</p>

As part of the 45th-anniversary celebration, the association also recognized its past Lifetime Member recipients: Jim Vidoczy (2000), Tony Facciolo (2011), Laurie Nicol (2018), Doris Valade (2019), Richard Halenda (2021), and Carlos Domingos (2023). Additionally, the contributions of former MPO Presidents were acknowledged: Mario Henry (2003–2005), Tim Schinkel (2005–2007), Tony Facciolo (2007–2011), Cory Van Groningen (2013–2017), and Carol Goriup (2017–2021). This recognition underscored their enduring dedication, leadership, and service to the association and the industry at large.

Several long-standing members were also honored for their commitment, including Klever Equipped Inc., Viscofan, and Foodcon, celebrating 10 years of membership. Canada Compound Company, CP Industries, Elora Road Meats, and Hela Spice Canada Inc. received accolades for 25 years of continued membership.

<h2>Awards and Recognitions</h2>
<p>
The Meat Industry Achievement (MIA) Award was conferred upon Neil Weston of <em>Weston Abattoir Ltd.</em>, recognizing his remarkable success and leadership in the meat and poultry sector.
</p>
<p>
The Associate Member Recognition Award (AMRA), voted on by the membership for outstanding contribution, was presented to Klever Equipped Inc. Moreover, the Joe Abate Community Hero Award, which honors individuals or businesses exemplifying generosity and deep community commitment, was awarded to Richard and Ola Halenda of <em>Halenda’s Fine Foods</em>.
