Seafood Wholesaler Recalls Nearly 10,000 Pounds of Fish Products Due to Inspection Failure

A seafood wholesaler and distributor based in Maspeth, New York, is recalling approximately 9,513 pounds of frozen Siluriformes fish ball products from Vietnam. This action follows an inspection conducted by the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), as reported in a recent statement from the federal agency.

Typically, seafood product recalls are announced by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, the FSIS holds the authority to inspect Siluriformes, which include species such as catfish and pangasius. Although the majority of Siluriformes imported from Vietnam are pangasius, the exact species involved in this recall has not been specified.

During routine surveillance of imported products in a retail store located in Massachusetts, the FSIS found that certain fish ball products lacked the necessary USDA mark of inspection and the establishment number. The products in question were produced in a Vietnamese establishment that is not authorized to export Siluriformes fish to the United States.
