Industry Comes Together for a Common Cause

The UK’s seafood processing and trading industry is embracing the establishment of the UK Seafood Federation (UKSF). This newly launched national body aims to unify the industry, providing a cohesive voice and coordinated leadership across one of the country’s most vital and varied food sectors.

Formation of a New Organization

Launched earlier this year, UKSF merges the Seafood Industry Alliance (SIA) and Seafood Grimsby & Humber Alliance Limited (SGHA). This consolidation forms a single organization dedicated to representing diverse businesses within the seafood processing and trading landscape.

A Platform for Change

In just a few months, UKSF has quickly positioned itself as a critical platform for the industry, focusing its efforts on addressing the most pressing challenges. The federation’s clear mission is “to amplify the voice of the UK industry, making seafood an integral part of the British diet for a healthier nation and planet.”

Leadership at the Helm

UKSF is chaired by Simon Smith, Vice-Chair of Sofina Foods (Europe) and former Chair of SGHA. The management team, led by Chief Executive Simon Dwyer, includes senior leaders Andrew Kuyk and Mike Short, alongside SGHA veterans Professor Val Braybrooks, Julie Waites, and Joanne Woodhouse.

The Federation has also secured membership with the European Fish Processors Association (AIPCE), enhancing its international connections and influence within the industry.

Sales to retail and food service surpass £8 billion annually, largely managed by UK businesses. UKSF comprises a fully committed board with representatives from the sector and a delivery team with a strong track record.”

Mike Sheldon, Chair of the Seafish Industry Authority, echoed similar sentiments, looking forward to collaborating with UKSF as an associate board member. He mentioned that UKSF’s priorities align closely with their own Corporate Plan.

Future Prospects

The inception of the UK Seafood Federation marks a pivotal step in enhancing representation and fostering shared values for a sustainable future. The Federation encourages seafood processors, traders, and stakeholders to engage with this initiative, contributing to the flourishing UK seafood sector.

Recently, UKSF convened a board meeting in Edinburgh, hosted by the Seafish Industry Authority, where Thistle Seafoods Limited, a major family-owned seafood manufacturer, was welcomed as the Federation’s newest member.

To promote collaboration across the seafood value chain, The Fishmongers’ Company hosted an informal networking event for UKSF board members, alongside representatives from Seafood Scotland and the Scottish Seafood Association. They discussed shared priorities, including innovation, educational engagement, and technological advancements.

Kara Brydson, Executive Director of Fisheries Innovation & Sustainability, noted the mutual goal to enhance the sector’s innovation and prosperity through collaborative efforts like those of UKSF and its partnership with the University of Lincoln.
