Sysco Announces Leadership Changes in European Merchandising Teams
Sysco, recognized as the world’s leading foodservice supplier, is making significant strides in its European merchandising teams by promoting Stuart Smith to the role of Merchandising Vice President for Sysco Europe. Previously, Smith served as the Merchandising VP for Sysco GB.
Stuart Smith’s Career Journey
Smith has over two decades of experience, having joined Brakes after a tenure at Sainsbury’s. His career has been marked by various executive leadership roles, where he notably led Brakes’ product proposition. Following Sysco’s acquisition of Brakes in 2016, Smith expanded his role to oversee merchandising teams across Sysco GB.
In his new position, Smith will now oversee product and procurement for all of Sysco’s operations across Europe, further enhancing the company’s strategic direction in the region.
Leadership Transition in the British Market
Stepping into the British market will be David Cole, who has been promoted to Sysco GB Merchandising Director. This promotion marks Cole’s addition to Sysco GB’s Executive Leadership Team.
Since his arrival at Brakes as Category Merchandising Director in 2023, Cole has played a pivotal role in various key initiatives, particularly in transforming the organization’s critical plate meat proposition and aiding in the acquisition of Campbell’s Prime Meats.
David Cole’s Background and Contributions
Cole brings a wealth of experience, having previously worked at notable companies such as 2 Sisters Food Group, M&S, Aldi, and Kerry Foods. His extensive background in both own-label and branded businesses positions him well to take on the challenges of his new role.
Executive Thoughts on the Transition
Sysco GB Chief Executive Paul Nieduszynski shared his thoughts on the organizational changes, stating:
“Stuart has made a fantastic contribution to the growth and development of Sysco GB, leading a high-performing team and ensuring that all our operating businesses are able to flourish. Stuart’s are big shoes to fill, but David has already demonstrated his value to the business. In a relatively short period of time, he’s completely transformed the meat category, developing both the quality and breadth of the range and was a critical part of the team that handled the acquisition of Campbell’s Prime Meats. He has a particular strength for building collaborative relationships between Sysco, its suppliers and its customers, helping to create some fantastic success stories for the business.”
