Career Journey
Could you tell us about your background and how you progressed to your current role?
My academic journey began in law, specializing in commercial law and the law of the sea. I had the privilege of studying both in Norway and abroad, culminating in a postgraduate program in Prague and a master’s degree in law from Dundee, Scotland.
After law school, I secured a traineeship in Brussels before returning to Tromsø, where I explored politics and regional development. Eventually, I found my way to the Norwegian Seafood Council, which has provided me with incredible opportunities to advocate for Norwegian seafood on a global scale.
Sustainability in Seafood
Sustainability is a key term in the seafood sector. Have you noticed improvements in practices since you started your career?
The seafood industry has made remarkable strides in sustainability efforts. This journey is ongoing, as the sea has long been integral to Norway’s identity. The industry, in collaboration with researchers and authorities, has a firm commitment to preserving our marine resources for future generations.
Increasingly, consumers recognize the importance of sustainable sourcing, which the NSC’s newly launched Top Seafood Consumer Trends 2025 report underscores. Brands must proactively demonstrate their environmental and social responsibility to align with changing consumer expectations.
While challenges are present, I am inspired by the sector’s relentless drive towards sustainability, exemplified by collaborative initiatives, innovations in the fishing fleet, and better utilization of marine resources.
Women’s Representation in the Industry
How do you perceive the support for women in the seafood industry in the UK compared to Norway?
I’ve been fortunate to represent the Norwegian seafood sector in varied markets, including a three-year stint as the NSC envoy to China. While cultural and political contexts differ, Norway and the UK share strong ties and cultural similarities, particularly in their support for women in seafood. I’ve experienced warmth and camaraderie in every market I’ve worked in, fostering meaningful collaborations.
How well are women represented in the seafood sector, especially in leadership roles?
Throughout my career, I’ve encountered exceptional women across the industry — from fish and chip operators to chefs, fishing vessel owners, and CEOs. These women not only contribute significantly but also inspire us all.
At our recent Norway-UK Seafood Summit in London, we emphasized balanced representation within our activities. It’s vital that both genders have equal opportunities to lead and innovate in this field, aligning with stakeholder expectations that champion gender diversity.
Encouraging Future Generations
What initiatives do you undertake to encourage girls and women in the seafood industry?
I actively promote the seafood industry as a vibrant career path for young professionals. Many are surprised by the international nature of this field and the multitude of career opportunities it offers.
In recent years, numerous organizations have initiated training and internship programs, providing young graduates the chance to engage with the industry. The Norwegian Seafood Council’s annual trainee program is one such initiative that not only offers exciting opportunities but also brings fresh ideas and diverse skills to the table.
With seafood being a truly global industry, whether one is studying marketing, law, biology, or technology, there will be a place for them in this sector. While we do communicate about these opportunities, there is always room for greater awareness of the essential roles women can play in advancing our field.
