Wagga Saleyards Report: Significant Market Adjustments Expected
Market Overview
Yarding: 4800 Change: +1100
As we approach the closure for the Anzac public holiday, cattle yardings have increased, revealing a mixed market landscape. While some secondary cattle showcased good breeding, many were not in optimal condition. Well-finished cattle across all categories were notably scarce. Although the usual buyers were present, not all orders were active this week, leading to fluctuating demand during the sale.
Demand and Price Trends
Restockers displayed a more cautious approach, influenced by current market conditions. A significant observation from the sale was the decline in cow prices, dropping between 35-60c/kg, largely due to the influx of cattle from the north.
Lightweight Steers
Lightweight steers faced a price adjustment due to reduced demand. Steers weighing between 200-280kg experienced a 40c decrease, averaging 476c/kg, while heavier steers in the 330-400kg range averaged 483c, reflecting a drop of 34c. In contrast, heifers maintained better demand, averaging 408c/kg.
Medium and Heavy Cattle
Medium weight feeder steers also saw slight easing in prices, ranging between 430-522c, down by 7c/kg. Trade steers and heifers in the 400-500kg category faced limitations, with some domestic buyers exhibiting reluctance to spend, resulting in prices between 400-516c/kg.
Export Market Challenges
The export sector faced challenges as not all buyers showed interest in heavy steers and bullocks, exerting downward pressure on prices. Several pens of cattle with 6 and 8 teeth saw significant price drops, while milk and two teeth steers generated robust interest from feedlots, leading to competitive bidding.
Cow Prices Decline
On the cow front, processors were hesitant amid a large supply of 1255 head available. Prices for heavy cows fluctuated considerably, with most sales recorded between 325-358c/kg, although some isolated cases reached as high as 368c/kg. Demand weakened for cows below 520kg, with D2-D3 cows trading between 240-320c/kg.
