Market Update: Grain and Livestock Futures on the Move
As of 9 a.m. CT, the agricultural market is displaying mixed signals in grain and livestock futures. Here’s a summary of the latest figures:
Grain Futures Performance
- Corn: December corn is down 1½¢ at $4.32½ per bushel.
- Soybeans: January soybeans are up 4¼¢ at $10.98¾ per bushel.
- Wheat: December CBOT wheat is down 6¾¢ at $5.25½ per bushel; KC wheat down 8¢ at $5.14¾ per bushel; and Minneapolis wheat down slightly at $5.59¾.
“Grain and soybean futures finished early trading mixed, driven by a notable increase in soybean prices following news that China agreed to substantial purchases of U.S. soybeans,” stated The Brock Report. “Initially, soybean futures traded lower, reacting to the meeting between President Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping, where traders exhibited a ‘buy the rumor, sell the fact’ attitude due to a lack of detailed commitments.”
Details of Soybean Purchases
The market experienced a significant boost when U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that China would purchase 12 million metric tons (approximately 441 million bushels) of U.S. soybeans this season, along with a commitment for a minimum of 25 million metric tons (close to 919 million bushels) over the next three years. Additionally, other Southeast Asian countries are reportedly set to buy another 19 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans, although specific timelines have not been provided.
Despite the soybean rally, corn, wheat, and cotton futures retraced some losses but continued to finish lower.
Livestock Futures Overview
- Feeder Cattle: January feeder cattle decreased by $2.60 to $331.43 per hundredweight (cwt).
- Live Cattle: December live cattle fell $1.03 to $229.88 per cwt.
- Lean Hogs: December lean hogs declined by 23¢ to $80.55 per cwt.
Commodity and Index Updates
