Laxey Partners with AKVA Group for New Smolt Station in Iceland
Laxey is set to embark on an exciting new chapter in its development by signing an agreement with AKVA Group for the design and delivery of Smolt Station II in Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland.
Building on a Strong Foundation
The collaboration between Laxey and AKVA Group has been thriving since June 2022, following the signing of an agreement for their first RAS smolt station. This facility is now fully operational, having successfully delivered five batches of high-quality smolt that meet the production plan. This achievement supports post-smolt and large salmon production on land, underscoring the strength of their partnership.
The relationship has further expanded into Grow-out operations, where AKVA Group has taken on an increased role in system delivery and installation across both Section I and Section II.
Preparations for Future Expansion
Smolt Station II is designed with an annual production capacity of 5 million smolts at 100 grams, utilizing three advanced systems. Plans for future phases anticipate scaling production to 10 million in phase two and ultimately reaching 15 million smolts per year in phase three.
The system will employ the same successful RAS solutions deployed in the first smolt station, ensuring strong and consistent operational performance. This shared experience between Laxey and AKVA Group will significantly reduce risks as they ramp up production in the upcoming phases.
A Commitment to Sustainable Salmon Farming
This landmark project reflects Laxey’s ongoing dedication to developing land-based salmon farming in Vestmannaeyjar. With a commitment to controlled biology, stable production, and responsible resource utilization, the company aims to enhance sustainable aquaculture practices.
Construction on Smolt Station II is expected to commence this summer, pending financing, with operations projected to begin in Q4 2027. Once fully operational, the facility will consist of seven RAS systems, capable of producing an impressive 15 million smolts annually at 100 grams, reinforcing the partnership’s commitment to innovation and excellence in aquaculture.
