40 of the Best Fish and Chip Takeaways to Celebrate Good Fry-day
A chippy tea at the end of the week is a tradition for many of us, and one that is especially synonymous with Good Friday. Millions of us eagerly queue at our local fish and chip shop, mouths watering in anticipation of indulging in this classic British dish. But why has this tradition become such an institution within our culture?
Did you know that consuming fish on Good Friday traces back to the Roman Catholic custom of abstaining from warm-blooded animals on Fridays as a way to honor the death of Jesus?
Similarly, Christians recognize Good Friday as the day Jesus died for our sins. While not a biblical requirement, some individuals choose to refrain from eating meat on the anniversary of Christ’s death as a form of remembrance.
To commemorate this occasion, the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) has unveiled a map showcasing the UK’s top 40 nationally recognized fish and chip takeaways, selected by the National Fish & Chips Awards 2025.
Andrew Crook, the President of the National Federation of Fish Friers and one of the awards’ organizers, expressed, “Good Friday is a significant trading day for fish and chip shops, where customers flock to enjoy this holiday staple. Making it to the top 40 list is a remarkable achievement for these outlets, all of which have undergone rigorous judging by fish and chip experts.”
“Each of these establishments serves up delicious portions of the finest fish and chips, so if you have the opportunity to visit them, it’s definitely worth it,” Crook added.
