Dalby Cattle Market Update: Recent Trends and Insights

Following notable rainfall in local supply areas, the number of cattle penned at Dalby saw only a slight decrease of 296 head, resulting in a total of 3,970. Export buyer participation remains strong, with the southern export processor from the previous week returning and becoming more active in the marketplace. Additionally, regular feed, trade, and restocker buyers were present and engaged.
Light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock responded positively to the rain, with prices rising over 20c/kg in certain areas. Yearling steers earmarked for feeding saw an increase of 12c to 29c/kg. Meanwhile, light weight yearling heifers destined for restocking or backgrounding also attracted strong demand, averaging 30c to 40c/kg higher. Yearling heifers intended for feeding experienced an improvement of 15c to 30c/kg.
A limited number of bullocks and grown heifers showed price increases. Most classes of cows indicated a rising trend of 5c to 15c/kg, driven by demand from southern processors.
Light weight yearling steers for restockers reached prices up to 470c, with a solid sample averaging between 412c and 419c/kg. Yearling steers for the domestic market fetched up to 447c, averaging 394c to 420c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers for feeding achieved a top of 444c, averaging 382c/kg.
Light weight yearling heifers returning to the paddock reached prices of 386c, with averages ranging from 328c to 337c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers for feeding made occasional peaks of 398c, averaging 336c to 340c/kg. Heavy weight yearling heifers for feeding topped at 364c, averaging 313c/kg.
A few bullocks were priced at 362c, averaging 350c, while heavy grown heifers saw prices around 349c/kg. Lower-quality medium weight cows for restockers were priced at 248c, averaging 235c/kg. Medium weight 2 scores for processors averaged 239c, reaching up to 240c/kg. Heavy weight 3 score cows averaged 252c/kg, with top-quality heavy weight cows averaging 273c and reaching a rare sale of 315c/kg, amounting to $2,249/head. Heavy weight bulls sold for up to 315c/kg.
