Seafood from Norway Welcomes UK Fish and Chip Award Winners to Northern Norway
This June, Seafood from Norway, in partnership with Norwegian Frozen at Sea, hosted an enlightening journey for some of the UK’s premier fish and chip shops and industry stakeholders in Northern Norway. This trip celebrated over a decade of collaboration and underscored the strong ties between Norway’s fishing industry and the UK’s cherished fish and chip sector.
Immersive Experience in Norway’s Fishing Culture
Held in the picturesque town of Sortland, Vesterålen, from 17th-19th June, the three-day program provided the winners of the 2025 National Fish and Chip Awards with deep insights into Norway’s vibrant fishing culture. Participants learned how the cod and haddock served in UK fish and chip shops is ethically sourced from the pure, cold waters of Norway.
Support for Sustainable Practices
For over ten years, the Norwegian seafood industry has been a proud supporter of the National Fish & Chip Awards (NF&CA). It also sponsors the Environment and Sustainable Business Award, reflecting a commitment to ethical sourcing and sustainability practices. The Norway trip has become a coveted prize, offering winners a unique opportunity to witness the sustainable practices underpinning the whitefish that form the backbone of their menus.
A Warm Welcome and Insightful Discussions
The group, including this year’s award winners, representatives from The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), The Frozen at Sea Fillets Association (FASFA), and media, received a heartfelt welcome from Sortland’s Mayor, Grete Ellingsen, along with local host Holmøy Maritime.
Participants engaged in expert discussions with the Norwegian Fishing Vessel Owners Association and the Norwegian Coast Guard, gaining insights into Norway’s advanced fishery management system. A special highlight included a video message from Norway’s Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy, Marianne Sivertsen Næss, emphasizing the importance of the long-standing seafood partnership between the two nations.
First-Hand Experience at Sea
A significant experience of the trip was a voyage aboard the Langøy, a vessel from Norwegian Frozen at Sea owned by the Prestfjord company within the Holmøy Group. Onboard, guests witnessed firsthand the craftsmanship and sustainable methodologies that define Norway’s whitefish industry.
Insights into Local Traditions and Operations
Further enriching the itinerary was a visit to the historic fishing site of Sildpollen, where guests savored local delicacies, including saithe mølje. While some attendees explored fishing in the fjords, others toured the Holmøy offices and whitefish storage facilities to better understand the daily operations that support the region’s seafood industry.
Showcasing Innovation in Seafood Production
The trip concluded with a tour of the Holmøy Production Facility, a state-of-the-art site that highlights the Norwegian seafood industry’s commitment to innovation and sustainable seafood practices. Surrounded by Norway’s breathtaking landscapes and eternal daylight, participants explored the journey of cod and haddock from sea to plate, fostering collaboration between UK operators and Norwegian leaders in the industry.
Celebrating Achievements in the Industry
Victoria Braathen, UK Director of the Norwegian Seafood Council, expressed her delight in hosting the award winners. “The trip was an invaluable opportunity to strengthen ties and spotlight the diligence and dedication in delivering high-quality Norwegian whitefish to UK fish and chip operators,” she stated.
