The Co-operative Group Pledges to Achieve 100% ASC Certification for Farmed Seafood by 2027

In a significant commitment to sustainable sourcing, UK retailer The Co-operative Group has announced an ambitious initiative to transition its entire standard own-brand fresh and frozen farmed seafood range to Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification by the year 2027.

What is ASC Certification?

The ASC certification is a globally recognized benchmark for responsible aquaculture practices. It emphasizes transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain while fostering farming methods that honor fish welfare, environmental sustainability, and the well-being of communities surrounding fish farms.

Initial Steps and Product Launch

As part of this initiative, Co-op has already introduced its first product featuring the ASC logo: the fresh seabass, which is now available in stores. Within the next 15 months, the retailer plans to extend certification to an additional 18 lines within its standard range, including popular items like fresh smoked salmon and whole shrimp.

Enhancing Seafood Supply Chain Sustainability

This movement is part of The Co-operative Group’s broader strategy to improve transparency, traceability, and responsible sourcing within its seafood supply chain. It builds on the retailer’s historical commitment to sustainable practices, including support for the Marine Stewardship Council for wild-caught seafood and RSPCA-Assured for its premium Scottish salmon offerings.

“Providing high-quality, sustainably sourced seafood to our customers is central to our mission as a responsible retailer,” stated Sam Darley, Co-op’s Fisheries and Agriculture Compliance Manager. “Transitioning 100% of our farmed fish to ASC certification by 2027 underscores the rigorous standards we have maintained since 2008, ensuring our seafood is sourced from well-managed farms and fisheries while minimizing our environmental impact.”
