The National Fish & Chip Awards 2026 Now Open for Entries!
It’s that exciting time of year again when fish and chip establishments across the UK and beyond can showcase their talents in the industry’s premier competition—the National Fish & Chip Awards. This foundational event will determine the standout operators and individuals for 2026.
About the Awards
Organized by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), this marks the 38th year of the awards, with returning principal sponsor Seafood from Norway. The awards are known for recognizing excellence within the industry, inspiring participants to strive for gold-standard measures.
Who Can Enter?
The competition is open to over 10,000 fish and chip businesses in the UK and internationally. Entrants can benefit from an improved application process this year, making it easier for hopefuls to compete.
Businesses that think they have what it takes to be number one are encouraged to take the leap. For those aged 25 and younger, the Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year prize is available, along with 10 other categories, including the newly introduced Menu Innovation Award.
The Judging Process
The judging process will be conducted by well-known experts from the sector. Each category will feature multiple rounds, requiring shortlisted businesses to complete interviews, tasks, skill tests, inspections, and a crucial taste testing, which will occur during a mystery visit.
Invaluable Feedback for Growth
Andrew Crook, president of the NFFF, emphasizes the significance of evaluations during the awards:
“The National Fish & Chip Awards’ selection committee does its due diligence. This provides invaluable critiques for business owners, commending peak performance and identifying areas for improvement.”
He further explains the importance of connection within the industry and how revised entry requirements will welcome many first-time entrants along with returning contenders.
Public Participation
This year marks a significant change as the public is invited to recommend their favorite fish and chip spots for the competition. Enthusiasts can visit thefishandchipawards.com and submit their nominations until Monday, July 7.
“Bringing the public into the mix adds a refreshing dynamic. This is the nation’s chance to help steer their local chippy toward national-level endorsement,” Crook adds.
Sponsor Spotlight
Excitement surrounds the partnership with Seafood from Norway, as UK Director Victoria Braathen shares:
“This partnership is a celebration of the people and businesses who bring fish and chips to life with passion and a commitment to quality.”
Success Stories
The launch event took place at the newly opened restaurant of the 2025 Takeaway of the Year winner, Yarm Road, in Darlington. Director-manager Will Burrell shared insights on their success post-award:
“Winning Takeaway of the Year boosted our trade by 30%. We are now seeing customers travel from all over the country, and even from overseas!”
Final Thoughts
Burrell encourages other businesses to enter the awards: “If we can do it, anyone can! Use the feedback to come back stronger.”
The shortlist for this year’s awards will be announced in September, with the winners revealed in February during a grand ceremony in London.
