Golden Girl Kara Aims for Glory at Island Games

Swimming sensation Kara Hanlon is on the cusp of making history as she strives to become the most decorated athlete to compete for the Western Isles Island Games Association (WIIGA). Thanks to sponsorship from Bakkafrost Scotland, this talented athlete is set on her ambitious journey.

Chasing Greatness

The 28-year-old swimmer will head to Orkney next month to partake in the International Island Games. With a current tally of eight gold and four silver medals, she is eager to add to her impressive collection.

The competition gathers athletes from around the globe to contend for honors in twelve sports over the span of seven days.

Supporting Local Talent

WIIGA, a not-for-profit organization, is dedicated to helping elite athletes realize their full potential while fostering friendships among island communities through sports. Bakkafrost Scotland, now celebrating its tenth year of sponsorship, has recently initiated a partnership featuring its premium product, Native Hebridean Salmon, alongside the swimming team.

Kara’s Journey

Kara expressed her gratitude for the games’ impact on her swimming career:

“The games have been so important to my development as a swimmer. I first competed when I was 14 when the Isle of Wight hosted it. Now, going into my sixth games with 12 medals secured, I’ve loved every minute of participating.”

She added, “Coming from an island where there are perhaps fewer opportunities, the games have provided a chance to compete at an international level.”

Event Details

The games are scheduled to take place from July 12 to 18, featuring a variety of events including archery, athletics, badminton, cycling, and football.

WIIGA partners with local clubs and organizations in the Western Isles to ensure the proper framework and support for athletes preparing for the event. Given the challenges of travel and training facilities in rural areas, Bakkafrost Scotland’s sponsorship is crucial in empowering local athletes to reach the world stage.

A Family Affair

For Kara, swimming is a family affair. Her brother Matthew is part of the squad, her father David serves as the coach, and her mother Marilyn is the team manager. Kara is currently one medal short of cyclist Kerry MacPhee, who holds the title of the most decorated athlete in WIIGA’s 40-year history.

Kara reflected:

“I’d love to break my own records and leave my stamp on the games. This may be my last appearance, so it would be great to perform in a way that will be remembered for a long time.”
