Innovative Advancements in Campylobacter Enrichment for Poultry Safety
On July 1, 2025, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) published a significant article titled “Improving Enrichment of Campylobacter on Poultry for Enhanced Laboratory System Performance,” featured in the peer-reviewed journal Food Protection Trends.
Focus of the Study
The article showcased an investigation into various enrichment broths that are capable of enhancing Campylobacter recovery within a 24-hour timeframe. Initiated in 2021, FSIS executed tests involving four distinct enrichment broths across five types of poultry products to maximize the recovery rate of Campylobacter. These broths were meticulously evaluated to determine the shortest time-to-results, with the intention of streamlining reporting procedures.
Significant Findings
The findings of this study played a crucial role in updating the FSIS Microbiology Laboratory Guidebook, specifically MLG 41. In March 2022, FSIS adopted a novel Campylobacter enrichment medium across all three field service laboratories which drastically reduced enrichment incubation time from approximately 48 to just 24 hours. This advancement has also streamlined reporting timelines, cutting down from three days to two for negative results, and from five days to four for confirmed positive results.
Commitment to Public Health
FSIS is dedicated to regularly reviewing its sampling programs to ensure they effectively protect public health. Their goal is to leverage the best available scientific data for informed decision-making, optimize resource allocation, and enhance workflow efficiency. To discover more about FSIS’ comprehensive evaluation of various Campylobacter enrichment media, keep an eye out for the article, which will be accessible for open reading in December 2025.
