Biosecurity Advisory Issued by the Feather Board Command Centre (FBCC)
The Feather Board Command Centre (FBCC) has announced a significant Infectious Laryngotracheitis (ILT) biosecurity advisory affecting an approximate 10 km area in the City of Kingston. This advisory comes in response to reports of ILT-positive cases in poultry from a small flock.
Importance of Biosecurity Measures
In light of the recent findings, all poultry handlers are urged to strengthen their biosecurity protocols, especially when interacting with any poultry or avian species in the affected area. ILT, primarily affecting chickens, poses severe risks to poultry health.
Signs of Infectious Laryngotracheitis
Farmers and poultry workers should be vigilant for the following symptoms of ILT:
- Increased mortality rates
- Noisy breathing and head shaking
- Off-feed behavior
- Decreased egg production
- Inactivity and ruffled feathers
- Conjunctivitis
If any of these signs are observed, it is crucial to contact your veterinarian and your board representative immediately.
Recommendations for Farmers
To mitigate risks, FBCC recommends that farmers take the following precautions:
- Avoid contact with non-commercial poultry and other birds
- Limit visitors to essential service providers only
- Monitor movement of birds, people, and equipment on and off the premises
- Practice strict biosecurity, including handwashing and disinfecting equipment
- Ensure all personnel wear clean boots, protective suits, head coverings, and gloves
- Control vermin and wild birds effectively

Heightened Awareness Due to Avian Influenza
Furthermore, with the ongoing threat of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), it is essential that poultry farms implement heightened biosecurity protocols. Those providing services to poultry farmers in the advisory area should minimize travel and adhere to strict biosecurity measures, including:
- Wearing clean boots, protective suits, hats, and gloves
- Washing and disinfecting vehicle undercarriages before other deliveries
- Avoiding visits to other farms outside the area for at least 12 hours post-visit
Duration of the Advisory
This biosecurity advisory is expected to remain in effect until early December 2025. If the situation necessitates extending this advisory beyond December 15, 2025, updates will be communicated promptly.
