Save A Lot Partners with ReposiTrak for Enhanced Food Traceability
In a significant move towards improved food safety, Save A Lot, based in St. Louis, has announced its partnership with the ReposiTrak Traceability Network. This initiative aims to automate traceability processes and comply with the Food Safety Modernization Act Section 204 (FSMA 204).
Automating Compliance with FSMA 204
The ReposiTrak Traceability Network will allow Save A Lot suppliers to transmit essential traceability data, as required by the FDA, for every impacted lot code with each shipment to the grocer’s eight distribution centers. Trey Johnson, Save A Lot’s Chief Merchandising and Marketing Officer, emphasized the importance of FSMA 204 to the grocery industry, stating, “We were looking for an easy-to-use and affordable solution that works across our total supply chain, from our suppliers all the way through to the independent owners who operate Save A Lot stores.”
A Commitment to Food Safety and Transparency
Johnson further highlighted, “Traceability is not only an FDA requirement, it’s also part of our ongoing commitment to food safety, regulatory compliance, and transparency in our supply chain.” After evaluating various solutions, Save A Lot is excited to offer its retail partners the cost-effective compliance path provided by ReposiTrak.

Understanding FSMA 204
Passed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), FSMA 204 aims to combat foodborne illnesses by enhancing the tracking and tracing capabilities of food products throughout the supply chain. This is achieved through the exchange of key data elements (KDE) among trading partners. ReposiTrak’s traceability network facilitates the collection, organization, storage, and retrieval of these KDEs, positioning Save A Lot ahead of the mandatory compliance timeline set for 2026.
A Comprehensive Solution for Supply Chain Challenges
According to Randy Fields, Chairman and CEO of ReposiTrak, “FSMA 204 presents not just a data management challenge for wholesalers—it’s also a supplier management issue. ReposiTrak addresses both concerns.” He noted the necessity for suppliers and wholesalers to understand that not all FDA-required KDEs can be displayed on product labels; rather, they must be transmitted electronically with each shipment. ReposiTrak streamlines this process for wholesalers, ensuring efficient data flow.
The Largest Food Traceability Network
With its adoption of the ReposiTrak solution, Save A Lot and its network of suppliers and retail partners join the world’s largest operational food traceability network. This system requires no additional hardware or software, and the onboarding process for suppliers is fully automated. Suppliers can establish connections with an unlimited number of trading partners, facilitating data sharing for a flat fee.
Looking Ahead
Additionally, Save A Lot plans to extend this platform to its more than 170 independent owners and operators, ensuring comprehensive visibility throughout its supply chain. Implementation of the new system will begin immediately, with full compliance expected well ahead of the 2026 deadline.
