Jeni Adamson: Steering Scotland’s Seafood Future
Highlighting Women in Seafood Through Innovation and Engagement
In its latest publication, Fish Focus shines a spotlight on the remarkable contributions of women in the seafood sector, featuring Jeni Adamson, the Industry Engagement Manager at Seafood Scotland. Jeni plays a crucial role in shaping a sustainable future for Scotland’s seafood industry, fostering connections across communities, processing facilities, and educational institutions.
A Foundation in Marine Science
Jeni Adamson’s passion for the marine sector has defined her career path. She holds a degree in Marine Biology from Stirling University, followed by a Master’s in Estuarine and Coastal Science and Management from Hull University. Before taking on her role at Seafood Scotland, she worked with Lantra, a sector skills council where she engaged with the aquaculture industry to promote awareness of diverse job opportunities within the field.
In 2023, Jeni joined Seafood Scotland, leveraging her extensive knowledge and experience to make an immediate impact. “On my second day, I traveled to Largs to trawl for langoustines with a local fisherman,” she recalls. “Being out on the water with the people whose expertise elevates Scottish seafood to an international level is unmatched. There’s always something new to learn from those who are integral to the industry.”
Inspiring the Next Generation
Jeni’s commitment extends beyond current industry members; she is dedicated to fostering future talent. She spearheads the Seafood in Schools initiative, which aims to engage young minds with the seafood sector. The program offers tailored workshops for both primary and secondary school students. Younger pupils sample various fish and shellfish, while older students combine culinary exploration with career guidance, broadening their understanding of potential roles within the industry.
“It may sound cliché, but the youth truly represent our future. To ensure the Scottish seafood sector’s success, we must ignite their interest early and reveal the myriad of opportunities awaiting them,” Jeni asserts. “Many envision careers in seafood or aquaculture solely related to catching or processing fish. However, the reality encompasses a vast array of professions, including marketing, HR, accounting, and technology development, among others.”
Advocating for Women in Seafood
As a strong proponent for women in the often male-dominated seafood industry, Jeni actively participates in organizations such as Women in Scottish Aquaculture and Women in Fisheries. She also volunteers as a STEM Ambassador, advocating for enhanced visibility and access to opportunities for women in marine fields.
“Research consistently shows that diversity fosters innovation and resilience, and this includes gender diversity. While women have historically contributed to the sector—often subtly or in unpaid roles—it is essential that we achieve greater representation across all levels of the industry,” Jeni explains.
What attracted her to Seafood Scotland was the organization’s commitment to championing women in the field. “Having a female leader in a senior role significantly impacts the industry. Donna [Fordyce, CEO] exemplifies how to reach the top while helping others uplift themselves. The visibility of women in C-suite positions sends a powerful message: these roles are achievable and accessible.”
Connecting Ideas, Skills, and Opportunities
Jeni Adamson’s enthusiasm for Scotland’s seafood and its community is palpable. Her efforts are instrumental in linking individuals, ideas, and prospects throughout the seafood supply chain. By advocating for skill development, sustainability, and diversity, she is instrumental in positioning Scotland’s seafood industry for a promising future.
