As Scotland approaches its Holyrood elections, the salmon farming industry has taken a proactive step by reaching out to all candidates, calling for immediate reforms to support the sector’s growth. Organized by Salmon Scotland and endorsed by 60 businesses, the letter emphasizes the need to reduce bureaucratic hurdles that currently hinder competitiveness.

Call for Reduced Red Tape

The letter highlights that excessive red tape places the Scottish salmon industry at a disadvantage compared to other nations. Salmon Scotland members have been actively engaging with political candidates from various parties ahead of the May 7 poll, illustrating the industry’s economic significance.

Overview of Economic Contributions

With a staggering contribution of nearly £1 billion to Scotland’s economy annually, the industry supports approximately 11,000 jobs, primarily in rural and coastal areas. In the Highlands, salmon farming alone contributes about £307 million and sustains 3,530 jobs.

Since 2018, the sector has seen nearly £200 million invested in innovation aimed at enhancing fish health and welfare, while also focusing on sustainable growth initiatives. The joint letter underscores the urgent need for reform, referencing a 2022 independent report by Professor Russel Griggs, which advocates for a streamlined regulatory process and the establishment of a ‘one-stop shop’ for aquaculture.

Scott also expressed optimism about the potential for further expansion: “With new export possibilities on the horizon, particularly in India and South Korea, we have a unique opportunity to strengthen our position as the UK’s top food exporter.
