Scottish Government’s Response to Land-Based Learning Review
Rural Affairs Secretary Mairi Gougeon has announced the release of the Implementation Plan in response to the land-based learning review. This plan outlines the Scottish Government’s actions in addressing the 22 recommendations put forth in the review.
In her statement, Ms. Gougeon emphasized the importance of attracting and training individuals, especially women and young people, with the necessary skills for the land-based and aquaculture sectors. The Scottish Government has committed to accepting or accepting ‘in principle’ all recommendations and is now moving forward with the implementation plan.
Ms. Gougeon highlighted the economic benefits of implementing these recommendations, stating that it will create employment opportunities in rural, island, and coastal areas. The government plans to collaborate with stakeholders, share best practices, and provide updates on their progress by spring 2025.
Background
The Independent Commission for the Land-based Learning Review report was published in January 2023. The report aimed to review learning in Scotland’s land-based and aquaculture sectors across all age groups to ensure a skilled workforce for a just transition to net-zero.
The Commission’s report provided evidence-based advice to Scottish Ministers, focusing on equipping individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge for the changing landscape of these sectors. The Scottish Government’s response through the implementation plan reflects their commitment to supporting the growth and sustainability of the land-based and aquaculture industries.
