Celebrating Seafood Excellence: Inspiration Day in London
On May 13th, Seafood from Norway hosted a remarkable Inspiration Day in London, highlighting the achievements of the winners of the National Fish and Chip Awards (NF&CA). The event focused on recognizing outstanding talent in the fish and chip sector while exploring the future of sustainable seafood within the UK’s hospitality landscape.
A Collaborative Learning Experience
Organized in partnership with the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the event gathered prominent industry figures for a day dedicated to learning and networking. A standout moment was a guided tour of Capital City College Westminster, where Head Lecturer José Souto demonstrated how sustainability is seamlessly woven into culinary education.
Hands-on Culinary Demonstrations
Participants had the opportunity to engage in a hands-on cooking session led by Carol ‘CJ’ Jackson, Master Fishmonger and CEO of the Seafood School at Billingsgate. She showcased the versatility of Norwegian saithe, inspiring attendees to incorporate this sustainable seafood into modern menus.
Reflections on the Future of Hospitality
In her remarks, Lisa Jenkins, CEO of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts, reflected on the evolving opportunities within the UK hospitality sector. The day culminated at the Norwegian Ambassador’s Residence, where H.E. Tore Hattrem commended the longstanding seafood partnership between Norway and the UK:
“The ties between our two countries run long and deep. Norway is a proud supplier of sustainable fish to the UK through our long-held seafood partnership. The Norwegian seafood industry is also honoured to be part of the National Fish & Chip Awards and the positivity this represents for the UK’s favourite dish. Today’s gathering is a valuable opportunity to celebrate our longstanding relationship, and the talented fish and chip operators across the UK.”
Networking and Future Adventures
A networking lunch and panel discussion followed, featuring contributions from both current and former NF&CA Takeaway of the Year winners, including Will Burrell from Yarm Road and siblings Kimberly and Ryan Hughes from Ship Deck.
The day concluded with an exciting preview of the winners’ upcoming educational trip to Sortland, Norway. This visit, organized by the Norwegian Seafood Council in collaboration with Holmøy and the Norwegian Frozen at Sea group, will provide participants a behind-the-scenes look at Norway’s innovative frozen-at-sea whitefish operations aboard the Langøy vessel.
Closing Remarks
At the conclusion of the Inspiration Day, Victoria Braathen, NSC UK Director, shared her thoughts:
“It has been a privilege to host the NF&CA winners once again for a day filled with insight sharing, seafood inspiration, and much-deserved recognition of their wins at this year’s Awards. We look forward to continuing to reinforce our support of these esteemed winners at this year’s educational trip in June, where they will experience first-hand the lengths Norway goes to ensure the highest quality seafood is exported to and enjoyed by British fish and chip shops across the UK.”
