New Proposal for Weekly Price Reporting on Skipjack Tuna
Undercurrent News has announced an initiative to implement weekly price reporting for frozen wholeround skipjack tuna sourced from prominent global suppliers in Bangkok, Thailand, and Manta, Ecuador. This marks a shift from Undercurrent’s previous monthly assessments of skipjack tuna prices in these key processing hubs.
Enhancing Market Transparency
This new initiative is designed to enhance market transparency and provide data-driven benchmarks for the tuna segment. It is a significant addition to our expanding portfolio of seafood price assessments, aiming to reflect the dynamic nature of the market.
About the UCN Price Assessments
The UCN price assessments will encompass products from major fishing companies, brokers, traders, and canneries, mirroring spot market trade in Bangkok and Manta. These assessments will be published every Thursday, prior to 4 PM CEST.
Proposed Product Coverage
The pricing basis for the new assessments will focus on CFR pricing in Bangkok, expressed in $/metric ton, and ex-vessel pricing in Manta. This will reflect values that fishing firms deliver to processing hubs. Specifically, the prices will pertain to whole frozen skipjack in the 1.8-3.4 kg size range, ensuring an accurate benchmark that encourages transparency and uniformity in pricing.
Quotation Series Structure
Pricing structures will align with standard industry trade practices, encompassing frozen whole fish from both the Western and Central Pacific Ocean, as well as the Eastern Pacific Ocean. By categorizing sizes, we aim to ensure broad market representation and relevance for key product specifications.
Strengthening Global Tuna Market Standards
This initiative is poised to provide valuable and independent price benchmarks for the global tuna industry. It supports Undercurrent‘s established reputation as a trustworthy source of seafood news and data. With over 3,600 datasets covering key species, this new service will further enhance UCN’s offerings.
Recently, UCN has expanded its price coverage to include over 450 datasets in the US wholesale market for various species such as shrimp, salmon, shellfish, cephalopods, farmed whitefish, and wild groundfish.
Your Feedback is Valuable
We welcome your feedback to help us tailor this service to accurately reflect market conditions and support your business decisions. Please send any comments or questions regarding this proposal to [email protected] by June 5, 2025.
All feedback will be acknowledged, and pending industry support, we aim to launch this weekly price-reporting service on June 12, 2025. From that date, Undercurrent‘s assessments for skipjack tuna prices in Bangkok and Manta will transition to a weekly schedule, while the monthly assessment will reflect an average of those weekly values.
We appreciate your continued support and look forward to collaborating to develop a reliable and robust price reporting service.
