Enifer Partners with FS to Revolutionize Protein Production for Aquaculture and Pet Food
Finnish startup Enifer has announced a strategic partnership with Brazilian ethanol giant FS to develop mycoprotein for aquaculture and pet food from thin stillage, a byproduct of corn ethanol production.
New Plant Development
Enifer is currently establishing a facility in Kirkkonummi, Finland, equipped to produce 3,000 tons annually of its PEKILO-branded mycoprotein. The collaboration with FS includes a plan to build a 500-ton pilot facility in Brazil, supported by R$9.8 million ($1.7 million) from the Brazilian innovation agency FINEP.
Once operational, the mycoprotein will target the animal nutrition markets in Brazil, Ecuador, and Chile. Should the pilot succeed, a full-scale facility could produce up to 10,000 tons of PEKILO per year, marking a substantial addition to sustainable protein sources in Latin America. According to Enifer co-founder and CEO Simo Ellilä, this project showcases the effectiveness and adaptability of PEKILO’s fermentation technology.
Advancements in Fungal Fermentation
“With this funding, we will advance key stages related to fungal fermentation, enabling us to move toward industrial production,” said Daniel Lopes, VP of Sustainability and Business Development at FS. “We will implement our pilot plant, learn how to scale its operation, and test the market with high-performance functional solutions for animal nutrition.”
Historical Context of PEKILO Mycoprotein
PEKILO has a rich history, having been in commercial production from 1975 to 1991 predominantly as animal feed for pigs and chickens. The mycoprotein originates from the fungal strain Paecilomyces variotii KCL-24, which was initially fed with spent sulfite liquor, a byproduct of paper manufacturing. Enifer has since modernized the process to accommodate a wider variety of feedstocks.
Eco-Friendly Protein Source
PEKILO is a protein- and fiber-rich powder, characterized by its neutral taste and color, allowing room-temperature shipping. Initially aimed at pet food and aquaculture markets, future applications will extend to human foods, including meat and dairy alternatives, as well as snacks. Enifer has also sought Novel Food approval in Europe and is working towards GRAS status in the US.
Valorizing Thin Stillage
The process captures high-value protein from thin stillage, addressing the nutritional limitations of existing byproducts. CEO Simo Ellilä remarked, “The PEKILO process offers an alternative, higher value route to valorizing thin stillage. We turn potentially problematic byproducts like glycerol into valuable protein.” He indicated multiple reasons for starting with a pilot plant rather than launching directly into full production.
Innovative Use of Agricultural Byproducts
Enifer’s approach to utilizing thin stillage is expected to add significant value to second-crop corn while not hindering DDG production. According to FS CEO Rafael Abud, “We are developing a relevant and innovative solution for animal nutrition using a pre-existing raw material.”
Feedstock Diversity and Advantages
When asked how thin stillage compares to other feedstocks such as molasses or lactose permeate, Ellilä emphasized the importance of understanding the advantages and challenges associated with each. “Thin stillage is exceptionally nutrient-rich, requiring minimal supplementation, though specific handling issues, such as solids and corn oil, need addressing,” he explained.
Market Readiness and Future Prospects
As for market preparation, Ellilä noted that while it is premature to discuss offtake arrangements, FS has robust local networks and has conducted extensive testing. Enifer is committed to sharing learnings from its European operations while adapting to the distinct consumer priorities in Latin America.
Commercial Opportunities
As for commercial interest, Enifer claims to offer a new ingredient that not only supplies protein but also aids producers in reaching sustainability goals. “In some cases, our ingredient can replace other components as a cost-cutting measure,” Ellilä noted.
Recent participation in industry events highlighted growing interest, with several new development projects initiated. While many of their commercial partners are currently confidential, they anticipate showcasing the ingredient at events such as Interzoo 2026.
