Meet Scott Kuegel
Scott Kuegel’s farming roots run deep; his grandfather started this legacy as a sharecropper. Growing over the years, the farm transitioned to his father and uncles, who divided the land, creating opportunities for future generations. Named after a local creek, Flat Lick Farms has adapted through family decisions, with Scott now at the helm after his brothers stepped away from farming. He proudly cultivates corn, soybeans, and wheat while also raising cattle, carrying forward the family’s tradition.
Scott recently achieved a remarkable feat in the 2024 Kentucky Corn Yield Contest. After years of driving to surpass the 300-bushel per acre mark, he finally succeeded with two varieties: winning the conventional non-irrigated category with a yield of 306.2459 bushels per acre and placing third in the ridge-till non-irrigated category with an impressive 306.9451 bpa. This achievement stemmed from meticulous planning, reliable crop emergence, and extensive soil testing. Scott stressed that although contest plots require more effort and cost, they are crucial for advancing the entire agricultural industry.
Financial Insights and Family Dynamics
One of Scott’s essential pieces of advice for farmers is to prioritize their compensation. He highlights the importance of budgeting for family living expenses, a vital practice often overlooked. Scott likens this financial structure to regular church tithing. This shift in perspective, fostered by his accountant, has notably improved his farm’s financial stability over the past 15 years—a vital lesson he now imparts to the younger generation.
Scott also shares his experience navigating family challenges, including divorce, and the joy of blending families. He and his wife, Katrina, are parents to five children, brought together through a mix of birth, adoption, and marriage.
