A New Flavor in Pineapples
In the early 2000s, the fresh produce research and development team at Dole Food Company set out to innovate the pineapple market. Their goal was to create a new variety with an enticing flavor profile, combining tropical notes reminiscent of coconut and piña colada, while staying true to their legacy of producing all-natural, non-GMO fruit. The aim was to have this new pineapple variety, the DOLE Colada Royale Pineapple, ready for Dole’s 125th anniversary in 2026.
Years of Development
After a dedicated 15 years of crossbreeding efforts at Dole’s historic pineapple farm in La Ceiba, Honduras, the DOLE Colada Royale Pineapple has officially arrived. This new breed showcases a gold-to-green exterior and a cream-colored interior, setting the stage for a tropical eating experience like no other. The pineapple makes its official debut during the upcoming IFPA Global Produce and Floral Show from October 16-18, 2025, and will be available in supermarkets across North America shortly thereafter.
A Commitment to Quality and Sustainability
Bil Goldfield, Dole’s director of communications, emphasizes the brand’s commitment to creating a premium pineapple that is both flavorful and accessible. “Our Colada Royale Pineapple is more than just a gimmick; it represents our long-term strategy of enticing more consumers to enjoy the unique taste of pineapples,” Goldfield explained. This new release signifies a landmark achievement as Dole celebrates its quasquicentennial of pineapple farming.
Meet the Breeder
Leading the charge behind this innovation is Roberto Young, a dedicated pineapple breeder from Honduras. After returning to his homeland in 1997 to join Dole’s pineapple breeding program, Young has spent nearly three decades cultivating new varieties, with the Colada Royale as his proudest accomplishment. “This pineapple is special and will remain part of my legacy,” Young stated.
Nutritional Benefits
The DOLE Colada Royale not only satisfies the palate but also enriches the body with its enhanced nutritional profile. While it provides all the usual health benefits of Dole’s pineapples, such as improved digestion and antioxidant properties, it boasts an impressive amount of vitamin B6—about two and a half times more than standard varieties. This essential nutrient is crucial for brain health, immunity, and protein metabolism.

In a move that echoes Dole’s long-standing commitment to social responsibility, a portion of proceeds from each Colada Royale sale will be reinvested into a community center for farm workers and their families in La Ceiba.
