H-E-B Partners with Celebrity Chefs to Promote Seafood Sustainability
In an exciting initiative to champion seafood sustainability, H-E-B has joined forces with renowned chefs Andrew Zimmern and Barton Seaver. Together, they aim to promote their new publication, The Blue Food Cookbook, which focuses on environmentally friendly seafood practices.
To bolster its commitment, H-E-B is also collaborating with Fishwise, a sustainable seafood consultancy. This partnership is pivotal for enhancing the retailer’s sourcing standards and ensuring that seafood offerings are both sustainable and responsibly sourced.
About The Blue Food Cookbook
Released in October, The Blue Food Cookbook is authored by Andrew Zimmern, an Emmy-winning TV personality and acclaimed chef Barton Seaver. The book serves as a guide for preparing nutritious seafood dishes while emphasizing sustainable practices.
Events and Engagements
H-E-B has organized talks and tasting events featuring the chefs in select Central Market stores located in Houston and Austin. The cookbook is available in over 200 stores, and recent events included book signings and food demonstrations on November 11 at H-E-B in Jordan Ranch, west Houston, and on November 12 at Lake Austin.
H-E-B’s Commitment to Sustainability
Jason Driskill, H-E-B’s VP of seafood, stated, “H-E-B is honored to work alongside chefs Andrew and Barton, two esteemed voices in the culinary world who share our commitment to seafood sustainability. This collaboration allows us to share creative ways to prepare nutritious recipes while amplifying the importance of responsibly sourced seafood that preserves our environment.”
To further their sustainability goals, H-E-B has partnered with Fishwise to source certified seafood from responsible fisheries and farms. The updated policy aims to:
- Enhance sourcing of certified wild-caught and farmed seafood.
- Expand traceability systems for all seafood products.
- Protect oceans, waterways, and the health of species populations.
- Combat human rights abuses and uphold workers’ rights.
- Promote ethical integrity within its canned tuna supply.
As the largest retail buyer of Gulf seafood in Texas, H-E-B actively supports fishing communities statewide. This commitment is part of H-E-B’s Our Texas, Our Future commitment, which focuses on raising awareness of sustainability efforts.
In addition to seafood initiatives, last year H-E-B diverted over 638 million pounds of waste through recycling, including more than 20 million pounds of plastic collected from store operations. The company is poised to enhance its policies with insights from organizations like Fishwise to maintain its leadership in sustainability.
