Scotland Sends Fishing Nets to Assist Ukraine in Drone Defense
Key Support Amid Ongoing Conflict
In a remarkable display of solidarity, Scotland has pledged to send over 280 tonnes of used fish farming nets to Ukraine. This initiative aims to bolster the country’s defense against relentless Russian drone attacks, as reported on the Scottish Government’s official website.
Repurposing Resources for Defense
Originally designated for recycling, these salmon farm nets will now serve a critical purpose following a specific request from the Ukrainian government. The nets will be utilized to safeguard vital infrastructure and strategic locations in Eastern Ukraine by effectively capturing and neutralizing explosive drones operating overhead.
Official Statements and Commitment
External Affairs Secretary Angus Robertson remarked, “As we approach the fourth anniversary of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, the Scottish Government remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine’s defense. This donation highlights our unwavering commitment to the cause.”
Details of the Initiative
Robertson elaborated on the logistics of the initiative: “The Ukrainian Minister for the Development of Communities specifically requested the conversion of used fishing nets into anti-drone netting for public roadways in Eastern Ukraine. In storage, we identified 228 old salmon farm nets, weighing a total of 280 tonnes. These nets will function by ensnaring drone propellers, thereby preventing them from reaching their intended targets.”
As drone attacks become increasingly frequent, resulting in significant casualties and extensive destruction, this initiative is poised to mitigate some of these assaults and enhance safety in critical areas.
Supporting the Effort
The Directorate for International Trade and Investment (DITI) has allocated £216,000 to assist with shipping costs for these nets. Additionally, countries like Denmark, Sweden, and France have joined the effort by contributing their own old fishing nets for similar anti-drone applications.
Coordination and Transfer
Scottish Government officials are currently collaborating with the Ministry of Defence to finalize the logistics of transferring the nets to Ukraine, ensuring a smooth and timely delivery.
