Scotland’s Salmon Industry Calls for Regulatory Reforms Ahead of Holyrood Elections

The salmon sector in Scotland is making a fervent plea to candidates for the upcoming Holyrood elections, emphasizing the urgent need to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and reform planning regulations. Industry leaders warn that current delays are adversely impacting investment, job creation, and export capabilities.

A joint letter spearheaded by Salmon Scotland and endorsed by 60 businesses outlines concerns that the existing consenting framework places Scottish producers at a competitive disadvantage on the global stage.

Economic Contribution and Investment

The salmon industry is a significant contributor to Scotland’s economy, generating nearly £1 billion (approximately $1.4 million) annually and supporting around 11,000 jobs, particularly in rural and coastal regions. The sector has invested close to £200 million in innovation since 2018; however, regulatory delays are stifling further growth opportunities.

Recommendations for the Next Government

In their correspondence, the industry leaders urge the incoming Scottish government to act on the findings of the 2022 Griggs review. They advocate for the establishment of a one-stop shop for aquaculture approvals and a comprehensive 10-year regulatory framework that would streamline processes and bolster productivity.

Export Potential

Salmon exports reached an impressive £828 million in 2025, alongside domestic sales totaling £1.5 billion. This growth illustrates the sector’s potential, especially with new export opportunities emerging in markets such as India and South Korea.
