MycoTechnology Focuses on Flavor Modulation and Sweetening, Abandons Alt Meat Plant in Oman
Fungi fermentation specialist MycoTechnology has made strategic changes under the leadership of CEO Jordi Ferre, shifting its focus from fermented plant proteins to core flavor modulation and sweetening products. This decision has led to the discontinuation of plans to produce a fungi-based meat alternative in Oman.
Prior to Ferre’s appointment in January, MycoTechnology had already started moving away from alternative proteins. Ferre, an industry veteran with experience in non-caloric sweeteners and flavor modulators, believes this shift aligns with the company’s strengths and goals.
Regarding the abandoned alt meat plant in Oman, Ferre stated, “There were discussions and plans, but ultimately, it did not come to fruition. We need to focus on what we do best and execute efficiently.”
The Oman Investment Authority (OIA), a major investor in MycoTechnology, remains supportive of the company’s direction despite the change in plans.
Clear IQ Growth and New Product Development
Supported by significant investments, MycoTechnology continues to see growth opportunities for its flagship product, Clear IQ. This natural flavor enhancer produced from mushroom mycelium has shown profitability and is used by over 100 customers across various industries.
Ferre highlighted the potential for Clear IQ to expand further, particularly with large food and beverage companies. The product’s ability to harmonize flavors and enhance certain notes makes it versatile in applications.
Honey Truffle Platform and Sweetening Innovation
Introducing Clear HT, a new flavor modulator derived from an ultra sweet protein found in honey truffles, MycoTechnology aims to provide innovative solutions for flavor enhancement and sweetness modulation. Clear HT recently received GRAS status for its safe use in food products.
By leveraging precision fermentation techniques, the company plans to produce Clear HT at scale without significant capital investments. This new product offers possibilities for improving the taste profile of sweeteners like Reb A.
Fermentation as a Service (FaaS)
MycoTechnology’s Fermentation as a Service initiative under previous CEO Alan Hahn has the potential to evolve into strategic partnerships beyond simple manufacturing arrangements. Ferre sees FaaS as a tool for fostering collaborative relationships and exploring mutual investments.
As MycoTechnology continues to innovate in flavor modulation and sweetening, the company remains committed to delivering high-quality products and forging strategic alliances in the industry.
